Yamashiro
There’s been many a wedding proposal at this spectacular restaurant. Yamashiro sits atop the Hollywood Hills with Los Angeles spread out beneath – of course, you have to pick a smogless day to see it. The restaurant itself is a replica of the famed Kyoto palace and the grounds provide a koi pond, terraced gardens and bridges. Award winning chefs prepare all the usual Japanese fare like sushi, teriyaki and tempura, as well as contemporary American cuisine. Reservations are needed for The Sky View room and the Garden room but not the bar area.

Carols by Candlelight
Enjoy a sunset picnic in the beautiful Witwatersrand National Botanical Garden, followed by Christmas Carols led by the Welsh Male Voice Choir of South Africa. Pack the smoked salmon and champagne, grab your picnic rug and cross your fingers that the rain holds off this year. Candles and carol sheets are on sale at the venue and you’re asked to take along toys (old or new) or tinned food for the disadvantaged. Make sure you arrive in time to enjoy your supper before the carols, which start at 7pm.
