Yamashiro

There’s been many a wedding proposal at this spectacular restaurant. Yamashiro sits atop the Hollywood Hills with Los Angeles spread out beneath – of course, you have to pick a smogless day to see it. The restaurant itself is a replica of the famed Kyoto palace and the grounds provide a koi pond, terraced gardens and bridges. Award winning chefs prepare all the usual Japanese fare like sushi, teriyaki and tempura, as well as contemporary American cuisine. Reservations are needed for The Sky View room and the Garden room but not the bar area.

Menshen am Sonntag

‘People on Sunday’ was a German silent film from 1929 that served as the springboard for screenwriter Billy Wilder move to Hollywood where he became one of its greatest directors. The story is simple – a group of young Berliners enjoy a Sunday afternoon. These screenings not only feature a brand new print but there is a whole new soundtrack – compliments of the Alliage Orkest who will be providing a live accompaniment of loops and grooves.

Montecasino

Casinos seemed to spring up overnight all over Joburg the minute gambling laws were relaxed. Gamblers can now get their fix much closer to home. The latest to be launched is Montecasino, although to be fair it’s a whole lot more than a casino. Created as an exact replica of a Tuscan village, it also offers a glitzy array of other leisure options including shops, restaurants, bars, cinemas, theatre and an interactive family entertainment venue for virtual reality games.

From the Cinquantenaire to Tervuren

The tram ride along the tree-lined avenue de Tervuren is a pleasant way to see the city. The journey itself, from Square Montgomery through the Forest de Soignes, is unforgettable and there’s lots to do at either end of the journey. Watch out for the impressive Palais Stocklet at number 281 and the Tram Museum opposite the Parc de Woluwe. In Tervuren, you can visit the Musee Royal de l’Afrique Centrale, with its dubious links to the Congo, and close to Square Montgomery is the magnificent Cinquantenaire.

Café Luciano

Order a Dean Martini – gin, lillet, orange peel – sink into a deep sofa, and enjoy standards from the newly installed trio that plays on weekends at this Rush Street café. In warm weather when windows open onto sidewalk tables, it doesn’t take much imagination to believe you’re in a trattoria in Rome. A mural of Lake Como runs the length of one wall and house specialities on the Tuscan menu include escarole soup, swimming with sausage and white beans, and country-style rigatoni tossed with smoky Italian bacon, sweet sausage, and herbs.

Morcheeba

Morcheeba have finally made the big time. After a two-year hiatus and a shift from blues to dance, the trio have gone from cultish beginnings to mainstream success. This Palacisalfa concert gives Italian audiences the chance to catch up on the band’s progress – and what better place than the capital to perform their locally-topical recent hit, ‘Rome Wasn’t Built in a Day’ and new release ‘Be Yourself’, both taken from the ‘Fragments of Freedom’ album.
