If you want to make Sunday a lazy, laid back day, try the new Brunch at Caffè la Torre located on the river in the extreme west of the Oltrano. Between 12.30 and 3pm, you can pig out on the generous buffet to the accompaniment of live music -usually jazz, blues, R&B. Traditional brunch fare (pancakes, pastries, coffee, juice) is on offer alongside more substantial dishes such as pastas, roast beef, risottos, salads and home made desserts.
Rugby League: Penrith vs Paramatta + Wests vs Roosters
As wonderful as Stadium Australia was for the Olympics, it’s proving a bit hard to fill for most other sports. One way to ensure a full house is to put on a double header for the opening bash of the rugby league season. All four of these teams have serious aspirations for the year ahead and by all accounts their confidence is not misplaced. It’ll be a great combination – cold beer, a warm evening and plenty of hot blooded clashes.

Leopoldo Pomés
Catalan lens man Leopoldo Pomés is better known in Spain for his TV advertising work, though he first achieved fame for an exhibition in 1955 that provoked enthusiasm and scandal in equal measures. This current show concentrates on his still photography. Pomés produces harsh, vital images; he sees the darker side of life, is not afraid of ugliness and sadness and does not seek technical perfection. The work on show, not ordered chronologically or thematically, reflects Pomés’ vision of the world in shots of people, scenes and objects.

Alas, Niel Stein’s newest brainchild is attracting all the hype this city can muster, but that’s no reason to stay away. Stein and partner Gabe Marabella’s have recruited New York chef Patrick Feury of Le Cirque 2000 to come up with innovative spins on traditional Tuscan cuisine for their new restaurant. The inventive fusion of Tuscan simple elegance and rustic cuisine create a brilliantly executed list of entrees-try the risottos or a magnificent dry-aged sirloin. Cap off the evening with delightfully sinful bomboloni. With a stunning venue of antique clocks, lofty ceilings, and dark African woods, this is Philadelphia dining at its finest.

A Cheery Soul
In an inspired twist Neil Armfield, the Artistic Director of the innovative Company Business, will direct Robyn Nevin, the Artistic Director of the Sydney Theatre Company, in the lead role of Miss Docker in Patrick White’s ‘A Cheery Soul’. Written in 1962, the play has always been a hit when revived. It’s a dark and ironic comic story of a relentlessly cheerful woman who dominates the small town of Sarsaparilla.

At this rate, the guests will outnumber the punters next month.

Interactive art gallery Carfax has invited six leading Cape Town hip hop DJs to give hard done by Gautengers a real vinyl experience. Joburgers may not agree, but Capetonians swear their turntabalists are the best in the country. No playing off CDs for these big boys – you’ll get to experience real live vinyl scratching and mixing. This venue also offers fine art, live music, theatre, multi-media productions and fashion. In fact, it’s rare that you get only thumping music at Carfax – there’s usually something else intriguing on the go.

Paul Taylor Dance Company
The acclaimed Paul Taylor Dance Company presents its annual two-residency in San Francisco in collaboration with San Francisco Performances. The return of this exuberant company never fails to set the local performing arts community on its ear. The ensemble’s 1999 residency made its way onto virtually every critic’s top-ten list for the year. That same year, the documentary about Paul Taylor, ‘Dancemaker’, was nominated for an Academy Award. Taylor is among the most popular choreographers working today, probably because his work often combines ample doses of fun with its complex and compelling precision.

Football: Ujpest vs MTK
Old teams play a traditional derby when Ujpest hosts MTK in a Hungarian league championship match. MTK’s number 10, striker Bela Illes, the best-paid player in the country, is fun to watch. Ujpest striker, Miklos Herceg and midfielder Istvan Kozma are also quite skilled. MTK was formerly a Jewish sport club, and Ujpest’s stupidest fans have been known to shout anti-Semitic remarks, but the moron contingent is shrinking. Call or check the Nemzeti Sport the day before, as kick-off times change on short notice.
