Kensington Gardens

W8 (020 7298 2117)

Bayswater, High Street Kensington, Lancaster Gate or Queensway tube. Open dawn-dusk daily.

The attraction of Kensington Palace ‘s
extensive gardens (John Evelyn thought them ‘very delicious’) was part
of the reason that William and Mary bought the house. Although the
gardens now merge into Hyde Park, they were, in the early eighteenth
century, laid out in a distinct formal Dutch style; they now have a
considerably more natural appearance. Wander through the sunken garden,
take tea at the Orangery , or gaze at the paintings in the Serpentine Gallery . The huge Round Pond in the middle is a focus for little boys (most of them over 40) sailing their model boats. Close to the Long Water is the Peter Pan statue .
Also for children, look out for Elfin Oak, puppet shows in summer and
two playgrounds (one off Broad Walk and one near Black Lion Gate).
