The Friends of Photography Ansel Adams Center presents the second exhibition in its new space, a selection of important photography by Ruth Bernhard and Michael Kenna, as well as an exhibition of work by Alfred Stieglitz and his contemporaries entitled ‘The Art of the Photograveur’. Bernhard is a vital presence in the arts and photography communities of San Francisco. Her work is highlighted with 50 images in this exhibition, ranging from nudes to still lifes. Kenna, who is also San Francisco-based, features his night photographs, images that explore the psychology of the night along with the fears and mysteries of darkness.

The Weir
The Arden Theatre presents Irish wunderkind Conor McPherson’s Broadway hit, ‘The Weir’, in its Philadelphia première. Winner of two 1998 Olivier Awards including Best New Play, ‘The Weir’ is a stirring tale about people losing and looking for kindred spirits. Taking place in a rural Irish pub, a fascinating story unfolds as a mysterious outsider, bringing promises of a new lease on life, captures the imagination of the bar’s regulars. Drinking ensues and the barroom chat soon becomes a series of increasingly spooky and distressing tales.

Picasso
This is the first major exhibition of Picasso’s works in Belgium. The unmissable show is stunning. There are 150 works from around the world including sculptures, ceramics, paintings, drawings and sketches. There is also a display of his prints at the nearby ‘Cabinet d’Estampes’, just across the river. The exhibition is in Liège so you can take the opportunity to check out where ‘Inspector Maigret’ creator Simenon found at least some of his inspiration.

European Christmas Market
Any excuse to go to the Grand’ Place is a good one. In early December it will be home to the annual Christmas market. You’ll find plenty of ideas for gifts, from towns throughout Belgium and from all over Europe, and if you’re lucky you may even see itinerant musicians and jugglers. If that’s not for you, simply relax in Europe’s most beautiful medieval square and enjoy a glass or two of mulled wine.

Yamashiro
There’s been many a wedding proposal at this spectacular restaurant. Yamashiro sits atop the Hollywood Hills with Los Angeles spread out beneath – of course, you have to pick a smogless day to see it. The restaurant itself is a replica of the famed Kyoto palace and the grounds provide a koi pond, terraced gardens and bridges. Award winning chefs prepare all the usual Japanese fare like sushi, teriyaki and tempura, as well as contemporary American cuisine. Reservations are needed for The Sky View room and the Garden room but not the bar area.
