Caffè Capitolino

One of the benefits of the recent restoration of the Capitoline Museums is the new Caffè Capitolino, which provides a welcome resting point on the tourist trail. Also open to non-museum goers, this bar is excellent for late breakfasts, snacks and offers a large selection of wines by the glass. Colour-coded tables – white for bar-service and blue for the more expensive waiter service – is a sensible innovation, though most punters make straight for the vast café terrace and the unparalleled views over the city.

Don’t Make Me Look Too Psychotic

Anyone who has endured a bad relationship will appreciate the wit in Bruce Pachtman’s small-scale comedy, ‘Don’t Make Me Look Too Psychotic’. The story of a playwright who dates a woman that coaxes him to write a show about her. The play is a funny look at what it means to be a dysfunctional couple, as each person takes turns controlling each other with sex, mind games and alcohol. Pachtman’s dialogue is funny and insightful, and his play is one of the most refreshing romantic comedies to come along in some time.

Rugby League: Penrith vs Paramatta + Wests vs Roosters

As wonderful as Stadium Australia was for the Olympics, it’s proving a bit hard to fill for most other sports. One way to ensure a full house is to put on a double header for the opening bash of the rugby league season. All four of these teams have serious aspirations for the year ahead and by all accounts their confidence is not misplaced. It’ll be a great combination – cold beer, a warm evening and plenty of hot blooded clashes.

Shakespeare’s Birthday Open House

The Folger Shakespeare Theatre makes the Bard’s B-day one of the city’s most enjoyable days by turning their venue into something Elizabethan. Jugglers and jesters wander around, plays are presented in every available corner, cake is served and crafts and games booths line the halls. There are also tours of the Folger’s reading rooms and gardens. And even though Willy never gave anything away for free, most of the events during this annual event are gratis.

Menshen am Sonntag

‘People on Sunday’ was a German silent film from 1929 that served as the springboard for screenwriter Billy Wilder move to Hollywood where he became one of its greatest directors. The story is simple – a group of young Berliners enjoy a Sunday afternoon. These screenings not only feature a brand new print but there is a whole new soundtrack – compliments of the Alliage Orkest who will be providing a live accompaniment of loops and grooves.

Biennial 2000: At the Crossroads

The African American Museum in Philadelphia presents ‘Biennial 2000: At the Crossroads’. Initiated this past year in an effort to explore the work of Africa American artists living within the Philadelphia area, the Biennial is a celebration of art that crosses the boundaries, mixing mediums of art. Featuring painting, sculpture, photography and installation, the exhibition looks at the cross-section of visual presentation rather than following long-standing categories for the arts.
