Morcheeba

Morcheeba have finally made the big time. After a two-year hiatus and a shift from blues to dance, the trio have gone from cultish beginnings to mainstream success. This Palacisalfa concert gives Italian audiences the chance to catch up on the band’s progress – and what better place than the capital to perform their locally-topical recent hit, ‘Rome Wasn’t Built in a Day’ and new release ‘Be Yourself’, both taken from the ‘Fragments of Freedom’ album.

Robert Rauschenberg

It must be hard if you’re Robert Rauschenberg and helped pioneer art’s playful deconstructions of popular culture nearly four decades ago. After all, popular culture has devoured itself hundreds of times over since then. Rauschenberg isn’t content with retrospectives, however, and ‘Synapsis Shuffle’ is a monumental installation cum performance piece, comprising of 52 nine foot panels filled with photographic imagery from the artist’s life and travels. This 52-card ‘deck’ is designed to be ‘reshuffled’ by different viewers – among them Disney mogul Mike Ovitz and über-homemaker Martha Stewart. These days, the icons of popular culture simply queue up to be part of the work.

L’Art dans le monde

Hot young artists picked out by ‘Beaux Arts’ magazine and 35 other contemporary art reviews are displayed under the cavernous pier of the Pont Alexandre III on the right bank. Plenty of edgy urban themes and fictional (or not) life stories, plus the overwhelming predominance of photography and video make a strong argument for the idea of a global culture that spans developed world, third world and former eastern bloc. The show provides an interestingly different view of world art from the craft and tradition bias of the recent Biennale de Lyon.

Secrets Bar & Restaurant

In the South Beach scene, late-night snacking really has become the norm. It’s not unusual to see couples supping at 10pm, parties laughing over veal chops at 11pm and clubbers strapping on the pre-dance feedbag at midnight. Usually, they’re doing this at Secrets. Open until 2am daily, the tropically-influenced fare at this new eatery ranges from pan-seared tuna steak topped with sugar-cane juice ($15) to fruit-stuffed French toast ($10), which pretty much means you can enjoy the secrets of culinary success not only late at night, but early in the morning as well.

The Raja Yoga Meditation Centre offers classes by trained instructors and, take a deep breath, doesn’t even charge. It may sound unbelievable in Hong Kong, but harmony can be yours for the price of the train fare.
