The Marine Turtle Project at Kefallonia

On Kefallonia, the Marine Turtle Project is a British nonprofit organisation which works to preserve the future of the endangered loggerhead turtle (Caretta caretta). The project was previously sponsored by the environmental group Care for the Wild, but this is no longer the case. The project started 10 years ago to scientifically observe the nesting loggerhead turtle. Since then our focus has shifted somewhat to the conservation and protection of both the turtles and the most important nesting site on the island, while still collecting the vital scientific data.

The beach we are particularly interested in protecting from development is Potomakia or Kaminia beach on the southern tip of the island, in between the bustling and lively resort town of Skala, and the quiet fishing village of Katelios. Several times a week we give a free slide show in both of these towns. Afterwards we can arrange for tourists to help us with our night patrols along the nesting beach.
