The Marine Turtle Project at Kefallonia

On Kefallonia, the Marine Turtle Project is a British nonprofit organisation which works to preserve the future of the endangered loggerhead turtle (Caretta caretta). The project was previously sponsored by the environmental group Care for the Wild, but this is no longer the case. The project started 10 years ago to scientifically observe the nesting loggerhead turtle. Since then our focus has shifted somewhat to the conservation and protection of both the turtles and the most important nesting site on the island, while still collecting the vital scientific data.

The beach we are particularly interested in protecting from development is Potomakia or Kaminia beach on the southern tip of the island, in between the bustling and lively resort town of Skala, and the quiet fishing village of Katelios. Several times a week we give a free slide show in both of these towns. Afterwards we can arrange for tourists to help us with our night patrols along the nesting beach.

One of the most popular spots for autumn leaf viewing or ‘koyo’ is Koishikawa Korakuen, Tokyo’s oldest traditional garden (the remains of a larger garden founded in 1629).

Controverse All Stars

If you don’t love reggae already, The Controverse All Stars will help you get into the latest sounds issued from this bass-heavy pulse. Local DJs Killahman (Jaro) and Fraggaboom have built up their own roving sound system, which is putting the ‘raw’ back into raggamuffin and reggae. Being the dub fountain from which drum’n'bass and many other currently popular dance music was born, Jamaica is now happily re-appropriating many of the new sounds it inspired. The result is yet another musical renaissance on this most rhythmic of islands.

Fashion of the Century

A look back at European fashion in the 20th-century by one of Lisbon’s less well-known but most stunningly sited institutions, the National Costume Museum. This exhibition takes us from turn-of-the-century collections inspired by the Napoleonic era to the kind of costumes worn by Portuguese fado diva Amália Rodrigues and Madonna. It concludes with a review of fashion in 2000, with creations from designers of various nationalities living in Lisbon today, including the successful avant-garde Croat designer Lidia Kolvrat.
