Bali Bar

This lush and very attractive new restaurant near the Bastille is good news for anyone who really loves Thai cooking, since Oth Sombath, former chef at the Blue Elephant and L’Asian is in the kitchen here, sending out food that’s delicate, delicious and perfectly seasoned at rather more modest prices than you’d pay at either of his previous outposts. The décor is very attractive, and the more moderate prices are attracting an interesting and friendly crowd for dishes like great Thai soups and salads to start, followed by steamed prawns or beef with shallots, mint and coriander. Portions are on the smallish side, so order lavishly, and go for one of the less expensive rosés for a perfect summer meal.

Noites do Brasil

Brazilian music and culture is all the rage in Paris right now, and the Latin spirit takes over the Divan du Monde every Thursday, Friday and Saturday during this summer. The hot nights start early with a live concert, followed by DJs spinning samba or batucada, as well as traditional and modern Latin pop. A summer treat to hold you over until the city repopulates after the August heat.

Show Ring Market

It’s not all filmmaking and theme rides at Fox Studios – there’s also some good old-fashioned shopping and coffee drinking as well. The free Show Ring Market opens on the weekends on the site where farmers used to present their prize animals. The stalls themselves are crammed with curios, antiques, fashion items and some dreadful stuff aimed at tourists and out-of-towners. As a bonus, there’s often a free concert raging nearby and a string of coffee places surround the market when you’re ready to sit and people watch.

Park Café

Surrounded by the city’s highest concentration of clubs, this hilly park with enviable views of Prague features a once-forlorn beer garden that has lately become a Zizkov district hot spot. Bands like the retro rockabilly Crazy Wheels periodically take over the stage here, while the crowds down top-notch brews and take in the all-too rare green space, at least in this part of the city that is.
